VG.The b/w illustrated bookplate on the front pastedown,is of R[obin] N[orth] Green-Armytage's,the book's original owner, and is designed by G. H. Holloway, and to the top edge of the front free endpaper a contemporaneous handwritten pencilled signature of R.N. Green-Armytage along with a pencilled date,1913.A further handwritten, but in ink, ownership name David irving Dec 1968 just below original owner's name,to same off-set foxed/spotted free endpaper.Publisher's original green cloth boards with bright,crisp,impressed/blocked gilt lettered title to front, similar lettering: of title+author,to a slightly dulled spine/backstrip,rear board plain and undecorated, sets of plain white chain-laid, water-marked endpapers with heavy spotting to front endpapers - bookplate unaffected though - rear sets of endpapers with slightly less spotting, but with a vertical, concomitant, indeterminate fluid stain from rear board bled through to the rear free endpaper; both hinges just starting to crack but still attached and in situ.An indeterminate fluid stain vertically following the rear board's gutter's fold/crease - similarly repeated to the front board's spine's gutter fold/crease down to foot of same and a smaller stain to the front, lower corner's tip, too.Rear board with a narrow horizontal and vertical fluid stains to top edge and fore-edge respectively, and lower corner tip of rear board also with fluid stain.Negligible shelf-wear to edges, all corner tips minisculely rubbed with reciprocal fraying and lightly curled, head+foot of spine/ backstrip also with gentle and minimal bumping and reciprocal creasing and minimal fraying head with a pair of tiny nicks/splits; foot of same with a tiny slit - but no other major nicks, tears or splits present.Top edges aged/toned with very minimal and faint foxing spots,fore-edges toned to a much lesser degree and virtually foxing-free; contents tight, text body bright, clean, solid and sound virtually pristine - better quality paper than the endpapers - no foxing,no dog-ear reading creases - appears unread, other than my own collation. A detailed description, but fair and honest, and is still an acceptable item, notwithstanding a close scrutiny of its outward appearance. UK,8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn,3-254pp [paginated] includes,5 short stories; plus [unpaginated] a blank, its recto with off-set foxing from verso of front free endpaper with publisher advert for author's other works (Elder Conklin and Other Stories and Mr. And Mrs. Daventry: A Play in Four Acts) on its verso,a half-title with blank verso,Charles Whittingham colophon illustrated title page with Chiswick Press address to its reverse,a contents list also with blank verso,5 individual story title separator pages, and another PRINTED AT THE CHISWICK PRESS page with blank verso,as book's last page. Author's third work and his 2nd collection of short stories which includes: 'Montes the Matador','First Love: A Confession', 'Profit and Loss','The Interpreter: A Mere Episode' and 'Sonia'. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading overall.
