Schmoller's essay was originally written in 1974, 25 years after he had succeeded Jan Tschichold as the typographer of Penguin Books (he subsequently became Head of Production and later Director of the company), and is here accompanied by a brief biography, a bibliography of his writings, and a review by Alan Powers of a 2005 exhibition of Schmoller's Penguin work, held at St. Bride's Printing Library, London. 600 copies of this first separate edition were printed..
