UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright,crisp,clean,matt,wrap-around colour pictorial lithographic style artwork by John Piper, illustrated dw/dj with black lettered author's name and black-outlined khaki lettered title to front panel, black lettering to a slightly darkened spine/ backstrip which has to both top+bottom edges, the minutest of chipping with any reciprocal loss. With negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners,no nicks, tears or splits present. Top edges coloured dark brown,fore-edges particularly bright without any foxing/ spotting; contents bright, tight, exceptionally clean - almost pristine - solid and sound,no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain red brick brown cloth boards/covers with bright, crisp gilt blocked lettering to spine/backstrip and near immaculate plain white endpapers - the only detraction is the ubiquitous and inevitable off-set shadowing from dw/dj's inner flaps to respective verso+rectos of both free endpapers.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj, 1st edn,v-viipp+1-181pp [paginated] includes author's foreword, contents list/ table,XXV (25) chapters; plus [unpaginated] a double-paged colour lithographic illustrated title page by John Piper, the design being repeated from the dw/dj and a 2pp blank at the rear of the book. Given the period of the book's production, more or less just at end of wartime paper-rationing (circa 1947),this is a really exceptional item,in it's cleanliness and entirety; with little detraction from either and fragility of paper used. A gentle memoir,a period piece rather in the mode of H G Wells' 'Kipps.' The book ends with the author's enlistment to fight in World War I. John Egerton Christmas Piper born in Epsom,13th December 1903 – died 28th June 1992,was an English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and textiles for both opera and theatre sets,a writer on the arts, photographer, and one of the leading neo-romantic landscape painters of the post-war era.He worked in the office of his solicitor father for five years, then studied at Richmond and Kingston Schools of Art and at the Royal College of Art.A member of the London Group (1933) and the Seven and Five Society (1934-35).Official war artist (1940-42).Later,a visiting lecturer at the Slade School of Fine Art.His book illustrations (of landscape and architectural subjects) share with his paintings,a preoccupation with decorative and picturesque effects, achieved with dramatic lighting and bold, varied texture.
