Bright,clean,front cover with b/w lettering to a light blue background; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks, tears or splits present - and reading creases to the convex bowed spine/ backstrip causing book's slight cocking/ lean.Top+fore-edges though lightly aged/ toned still clean with minimal foxing/ spotting; contents bright,tight,clean - unusually,no page-edge toning,solid and sound - near pristine - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,12mo wraps,p/back,1st edn,5- 151pp [paginated] includes 22 chapters, plus [unpaginated] half-title with story precis,title page and to verso of rear cover,a PELMAN INSTITUTE advert. Christopher Hale's series detective was Lt. Bill French of the Michigan State Police.She published around 11 novels (1935-1949).Her real name was Frances Moyer Ross Stevens. Believed to be a paperback original and as such,it denotes the first format and its first appearance in print of the book/title.Paperbacks usually follow on from the HB edn,but can be published at the same time as the HB edn,but p/back originals are either the only format,or published prior to any other format.An extremely uncommon and scare title/example of the contemporary period. Miss Josephine Picard was held in awe by the inhabitants of Oak City,including the bullying mayor himself.As estate manager for the wealthiest man in town,she had a finger in every municipal pie and it was she who discovered the body of the city treasurer under circumstances ubfavourable to Jonny Marsh.As this young man was not only the grandson of Miss Josephine's friend and employer,but the apple of er charming secretary's eye,Miss Josephine took steps.Defying the city authorities she called in the State police with whom came our old friend Lieutenant Bill French,and this formidable team was invincible in ferreting out the murder mystery. UK publisher from 1930s to 1960s.Thomas Volney Boardman founded his London-based company Boardman Books (a.k.a T.V. Boardman Ltd.) in the 1930s and was responsible for the first British hardcover printings of Rbt. E. Howard's 'The Coming of Conan.' as well as introducing several American newspaper strips into the UK,thereby pioneering British reprinting of US comics.During WW2,British import restrictions prevented US comics being officially imported,but Boardman arranged permission to produce abridged British printings of a couple of US comic titles.After the war they produced new titles through their Popular Press imprint,,starring amongst others, space hero Swift Morgan and secret agent Roy Carson,as well as annuals 'Buffalo Bill True West' (1940s-1960) these being the last annuals the company produced.The company also stopped producing comics in 1961 and finally finished publishing in 1967. It published paperback,hardback books, pulp magazines,and comic books,and besides mystery,fantasy and sci-fi,the company alsom published other genres of both fiction and non-fiction.Particularly well-known for the long-running monthly series of hardback 'Bloodhound Mysteries' with it's distinctive logo,most with Denis McLoghlin illustrated dw/djs.
