Includes many tables & charts, as well as a 42 page synopsis of the data at the end. Contains fascinating statistics about Civil War troops including hair & eye color, body and head dimensions & proportions, pulmonary capacity, vision, condition of teeth, baldness etc etc. all according also by race (white, colored, Indians, students, etc. The U.S. Sanitary Commission was a private relief agency created by federal legislation in 1861 to support the sick and wounded soldiers of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. Gould (1824-1896) was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Actuary of the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Known chiefly as a pioneering American astronomer (discoverer of the Gould Belt ), 1st American to obtain a PhD in astronomy, founder of the Argentine National Observatory, and creator of the Astronomical Journal. The binding is quite vibrant, gilt bright, with light wear at the extremities. The paper at the internal hinges shows some cracks but the hinges themselves are very tight. Small edge chip on the first free endpaper in the rear. Overall a very good plus or better copy of a scarce book, especially in this condition.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
