Though the original books written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo,Rene Goscinny they are still credited. Visually the exterior appearance is still exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 30+ year-old age [and nature, i.e. a children's book.It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite that it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults. The protagonist, the titular character Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. The 'ix' suffix of both names echoes the name of Vercingetorix,a historical Gaul chieftain, the other names are spelling puns. The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans.Well, not entirely. . . One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum,Aquarium,Laudanum and Compendium . . . . The Romans try to capture Druid Getafix, as part of their plan to deprive a rebel village of Gauls from the magic potion that gives them super-human strength. When Asterix and Obelix attempt a rescue, Obelix throws and accidentally hits Getafix with a menhir in the resulting chaos, causing him to develop amnesia and insanity. While the village comes to grip with this, Prolix, a conman posing as a soothsayer, arrives during a storm and begins deceiving some of the superstitious and credulous villagers into believing a number of his prophecies, which he predicts in exchange for food and drink and later, gold. . . Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were a French writer/artist team.Born 1925 and 1927 respectively, the two men have - together or separately - worked on many comic strips, but are best known for their series of books featuring the 'indomitable Gaul' Asterix. He made his first appearance in the French magazine,'Pilote',in 1959,and has since featured in well over two dozen books.Goscinny also created the characters Lucky Luke,Ompa-pa,Iznogoud and Nicholas, albeit in collaboration with other artists. He died in 1977.
