Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 45 year-old age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral child's book.It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for its overall cleanliness and the lack of other detracting faults. The 20th volume of the Asterix comic book series,by René Goscinny (stories) and Albert Uderzo (artwork). It was originally serialized in Pilote issues 687–708 in 1973.It is the best-selling title in the history of the series, owing to its sales in the French market, but is one of the least-selling titles in the English language, thereby making it a much scarcer copy to find in as good a grade as this is. Unlike most editions of the series, the map that is shown before the story begins does not present Gaul and a close-up of the village with the four surrounding Roman camps.Instead the map is of Corsica and a multitude of camps around the coastline. The story begins with a banquet celebrating the anniversary of Vercingetorix's victory at the Battle of Gergovia. As part of the celebrations, the indomitable Gauls always attack the local Roman camps; as a result, the Roman soldiers always go on "special manoeuvres" en masse to avoid the punch-up. On this particular year various people who have helped the Gauls against the Romans in previous books have been invited along with their wives. Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were a French writer/artist team.Born 1925 and 1927 respectively, the two men have - together or separately - worked on many comic strips, but are best known for their series of books featuring the 'indomitable Gaul' Asterix. He made his first appearance in the French magazine,'Pilote',in 1959,and has since featured in well over two dozen books.Goscinny also created the characters Lucky Luke,Ompa-pa,Iznogoud and Nicholas, albeit in collaboration with other artists. He died in 1977.
