Volume I: [2],iv,310 pp.; Volume II: [4],369 pp. Each volume with 32 plates inserted, of which many are chromolithographs, and with numerous illustrations in the text. White silk over boards, with printed illustration and title to top board, and title printed to spine. The white silk has become rather grey and generally soiled over time, and is frayed at edges. The lower joint of Volume 2 is split, but the board remains attached. Text and plates are mostly clean despite occasional foxing. An early and important work which fueled Western interest in Japan and helped to initiate the 'Japonisme' which would culminate in Art Nouveau.
