Goethe founded California State University, Sacramento and worked with the National Park Service to help establish interpretive guide programs. Goethe showed a great interest in California history and wrote about the Forty-Niners and the state's famous redwood trees. Goethe is a controversial figure due to his staunch support of eugenics. Eugenics is a "science" based on racial discrimination stating that certain races are naturally superior or inferior to one another. Nazi eugenics eventually led to the horrific events of the Holocaust. Following the Holocaust, American and international interest in eugenics became obsolete, after the world witnessed what eugenics could lead to. The subject of this book is quite apart from eugenics and is instead, as the title indicates, is about the origin of place names in the Gold Belt of California. Names are placed alphabetically. Alphabetical index in the back.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
