This fine art folio,is designed to carry forward to future generations the story of the bravery of those who served with RAF Bomber Command during WW2.It is the companion volume to '.so few.',which itself recognised the heroism of the men of Fighter Command whose stubborn defence during the Battle of Britain stayed the westward advance of the Nazi menace and brought precious months in which to recover our strength. The first volume,'.so few.',was published in 1990 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.401 copies at £1,600 each; of which No 1 was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and No 349 by PM John Major to President Bush for the Library of Congress.W H Smith then produced a popular version which reached No.3 in the non-fiction best-seller list.It featured 25 surviving fighter pilots, who all insisted that a second, companion volume should be created to honour their brothers-in-arms in Bomber Command. This second volume has been created, like the first, for RAF Benevolent Fund, and this is the trade edition produced for Macmillan,Canada. The second volume tells the stories of 25 bomber crewmen. It is a small tribute to a group of men, one third of them from overseas, whose enormous contribution to winning WW2 has largely been unrecognised. They have been picked by their peers to represent all those other ordinary men, coming from all kinds of backgrounds throughout the Commonwealth, whose courage and dedication to our cause was anything but ordinary. The central theme is the courage of thousands of men, including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged period of physical danger and mental strain.Over 55,000 of them were killed. The principal content allocates 10pp to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pilots, navigators,bomb-aimers,signallers,flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in WW2.Each has a biography,a photograph of his memorabilia,a handwritten reminescence and a painted silhouette showing him as he was in 1944.
