The first dateable appearance of this celebrated series was in 1750. It is likely, however, that these plates had been published previously. The style of etching suggests a date closer to Piranesi\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s third Venetian period, c. 1745. In 1760 Piranesi was to reissue these plates as the Caceri d\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'invenzione, with his name now on the title page. In many instances the original plates were heavily reworked with stronger tonal contrasts, more architecturally defined settings and more explicit imagery. (Wilton-Ely, p.48)
