SECOND STATE (Hind).
This print comes from Piranesi\\\'s \\\'Carceri d\\\'Invenzione\\\' and is signed \\\"Piranesi F.\\\" in the lower left, and bears the numerals \\\"XV\\\" in the upper left.
As Hind describes, this print features the added galleries not present in the first state, as well as a darker impression. It does not have the numbers \\\"363\\\" printed in the spandril of the foremost arch, as Hind indicates for the third state.
Because of the density of the impression, it is difficult to make out the watermark. Hind 29.
The first dateable appearance of this celebrated series was in 1750. It is likely, however, that these plates had been published previously. The style of etching suggests a date closer to Piranesi\\\\\\\'s third Venetian period, c. 1745. In 1760 Piranesi was to reissue these plates as the Caceri d\\\\\\\'invenzione, with his name now on the title page. In many instances the original plates were heavily reworked with stronger tonal contrasts, more architecturally defined settings and more explicit imagery. (Wilton-Ely, p.48)
