Gill, Stephen J., and others : Lesotho, Kingdom in the sky

(Berg en Dal, Afrika Museum, in cooperation with The Netherlands-Lesotho Foundation, 1993)

225 x 247 mm; laminated pictorial wraps; pp. 216; profusely illustrated with maps, line drawings and contemporary and historical photographs, some of which in full colour. Fine condition. "This book accompanying the exhibition Lesotho, Kingdom in the sky, attempts to reveal the beautiful and unusual characteristics of the country and its culture without romanticising this society. It sketches a portrait of a society which has undergone radical change during the last centuries in response to the developments and threats in its surroundings. These changes gathered pace in the 19th century due to a wave of wars with neighbouring groups, the conversion to Christianity brought about by Western missionaries and the contacts and conflicts with the white farmers from the British Cape colony. The strong influence on Lesotho society and culture in the 20th century from the increasing economic and political power of the Republic of South Africa is revealed, but it is also made clear that important elements of the Basotho culture have survived despite profound social and political changes. . . . The selected photographs of the exhibition which appear throughout the book provide an impression of the daily life and landscape of Lesotho, the kingdom in the sky."
