First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 352 pages. Rare Granta Magazine/Stephen Gill Debut Portfolio Issue. The third collection of the magazine's now-legendary "Best of Young British Novelists" Issues. The First Issue was published in 1983, and included such now-established authors as Martin Amis, Julian Barnes, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, and Salman Rushdie, among others. The Second Issue was published in 1993, and included such authors as Iain Banks, Alan Hollinghurst, Hanif Kureishi, Will Self, and Jeanette Winterson, among others. The Third Issue was published in 2003, and proclaimed Monica Ali, Hari Kunzru, David Mitchell, Rachel Seiffert, and Zadie Smith as the hottest young writers in the United Kingdom today. The Issue also marks the very first appearance in published form of the portfolio of Stephen Gill, all of them in color, and is, in effect the photographer's debut collection. "Postcards from Britain" presents some of the finest and most representative images by the British photographer Martin Parr has since declared is destined for greatness. Firmly grounded in the great British documentary tradition, Stephen Gill's photographs are honest, telling, and brilliant. His conceptual rigor and intelligence, unsentimental empathy for his subjects, and delicate use of color are astonishingly assured (that is, devoid of artistic vanity and self-indulgence) for a photographer who just started taking photographs (in his early 20's) and already has several published collections and one masterpiece (in his early 30's). One fascinating tidbit: Stephen Gill's very first published photograph was in The New York Times in 1996, when he was 24 years old. An absolute "must-have" title for Stephen Gill collectors. This copy of the Granta Issue is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on the title page of the Portfolio by Stephen Gill. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 15 doublespread color plates. Stephen Gill's "Hackney Wick" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEPHEN GILL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0903141582.
