UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,2nd imp. [First published October,1942 and a 2nd impression - this example - also in October,1942.BOOK PRODUCTION WAR ECONOMY STANDARD'.The typography and binding of this book conform to the authorised economy standard' advice/notification to recto of title page.Uncommon example with a dw/dj,given it's period of production, i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of cheap paper stock generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/ title. With war-time paper rationing and conservation of that and other materials, pulping was actively encouraged,so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing, opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced. Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster, exhibiting several faults,blemishes,foxing/spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition.] VG+/VG.Owner inscrptn to ffe,and price-clipped dw/dj.Majority of light creasing, rubbing and chipping to top edges of dw/dj and to both head+foot of slightly darkened spine/backstrip - some very minimal loss to top corner tips and head of spine/ backstrip.Closed tear foot of same, and 1.5" split to front gutter's spine's crease/fold.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original dark blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt design/decoration - repeated from red ink printed design to front panel of dw/dj and from b/w illustrated title page too - to centre of upper board and bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt lettering to spine/backstrip and bright, clean, plain white eps without foxing/spotting or any off-set foxing from internal dw/dj flaps. Top+fore-edges slightly toned with fore+ bottom edges deckled (untrimmed); contents bright, crisp and generally clean with minimal foxing/spotting to a few prelims (from half-title to couple of pages of first essay - pp9-19) and last couple of pages last essay - else solid and sound. UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,2nd imp,5- 93pp includes contents list/table with blank reverse,an introduction by Mary Gill also with blank reverse - these also with minimal foxing/spotting; plus [unpaginated] foxed half-title with wood-cut illustration to it's reverse, wood-cut illustrated title page and a wood-cut illustration to reverse of last page of last essay and 2pp foxed/spotted blanks.Wood-cut illustrations by Eric Gill includes 2 essay tailpiece thumbnail illustrations. These essays collected here, all belong to the last year of Eric Gill's life, when his thought was most penetrating and his experience of men and things most mature. Those who know his work already will not need to be told that the general theme is one and the same - man as he should be by his nature and destiny, man as he is forced to become in the subhuman conditions of a servile industrial civilization. But the theme is developed in new and varied ways, and though some of the essays have such expected titles as Work,Private Property, and The Leisure State, the old principles are applied to new material in the two papers on Education and in the devastating indictment of 500 Years of Printing.Of the 9 essays included here, the last two are previously unpublished.
