The iconic New Orleans' Mardi Gras street argot summing up the carnival atmosphere of these indelible images. "Strings of beads, doubloons, and other trinkets are passed out or thrown from the floats in the Mardi Gras parades to spectators lining the streets. In 1974, Bruce Gilden was a young photographer when he first went down to Mardi Gras to shoot his first personal essay away from his home city of New York. But when Gilden first stepped foot in New Orleans, he found himself in 'a pagan dream where you can be what you want to be'. He became a regular visitor, making seven trips to the mayhem of Bourbon Street between 1974 and 1982. The energy, mentality, and social and cultural mores of Mardi Gras were all new for Gilden, but he captured the carnival crowds with the same raw intensity and poignancy that characterize his New York street photography" (Publisher's blurb). Bruce Gilden has taken the genre of street photography and pushed it in new directions, documenting the essence of the people he sees and the social landscape through which they move. His photographs have been widely exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world, and are included in the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art New York; Brooklyn Museum of Art New York; Victoria And Albert Museum London; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; and National Gallery of Canada, among others. An absolute "must-have" title for Bruce Gilden collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Bruce Gilden. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. Bruce Gilden's "Go" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BRUCE GILDEN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 386828608X.
