A graphic celebration of Chaplin's centenary conducted by Denis Gifford, edited and designed by Mike Higgs.Charlie Chaplin was born in London in 1889.He was the son of Charles Chaplin,a comedian and Hannah Chaplin,a singer and dancer. In 1910 he left England with the Karno Comedy Company and in 1913 joined the Keystone Studios where he started a film career that would make his name world famous. The image of the little tramp with the moustache, hat, cane, baggy trousers and big boots would soon become an icon. The character he created was ideal material for artists to use and aside from the posters which advertised his films, his image soon appeared on a host of items from comic strips and children's toys,to magazine covers, post cards, books and even postage stamps! While other books concentrate on dissecting every aspect of his films, this production prefers to dwell on the ephemeral side of Chaplin's image and on his centenary, hopes to bring to the reader a little of the fun that the man spent a lifetime creating. Chaplin. The little Tramp.Think of the man and the image he created is sure to spring to mind. Chaplin's screen creation has inspired a mass of iconography since he first appeared on the silver (but silent) screen in 1914. On the One Hundredth anniversary of his birth, this book takes an affectionate look at the numerous images created by designers, illustrators and carttonists over the years that have helped keep the image of the man fresh in the public's mind. This compilation of posters, toys, comic strips, stories, adverts, magazine covers, sheet music, postcards, games and figurines and other varied ephemera serve as a unique companion to the many books and articles already written about the legendary Charlie Chaplin.
