'Battle in the Irish Sea' is the story - almost unknown - of the final attempt by German U-boat crews to alter the inevitable outcome of WW2. Their failure,at great cost, resulted from team work of the Allied convoy system together with steady improvement of research into the technology of Radar,Direction Finding and of shore bases in charge of such people as Admiral, Sir Max Horton and Captain Roberts of the Western Approaches Tactical Training Unit. The little ships of the Royal Navy - of which Manners was one - escorted vast numbers of merchant ships desperately needed if the Island Fortress was to survive that terrible war which rocked the whole world from 1939 to 1945. Originally DE523,built Boston,Mass,USA,renamed and commissioned into Captain Class Frigate's fleet and named after one of the Captains of the Line, who had commanded and fought in the Battle of Trafalgar. The crews of these new ships were almost always composed of young men who fulfilled, admirably, their duties at sea and met the enemy with heroicity. HMS Manners survived for one year, travelling 32,000 nautical miles from her date of launch in the Boston Navy Yard in Massachusetts to her rendezvous with U-Boat 1051 under the command of Oberleutenant Heinrick von Holleben. She was a happy ship from the moment of her launch and commissioning just prior to Christmas 1943 until her torpeding off Holyhead on 26th January 1945. Her gallant crew, including those who lost their young lives, should be remembered with thankfulness.
