The work, under the guise of a tale, introduces considerable information about South Africa generally at this period'.In the days before the discovery of diamonds and gold the author’s aim is to promote the land “beyond the Orange River" as a region for cotton growing to provide raw material for the mills of Lancashire in the event of disruptions in the supply from the United States or the "Disunited States" as he refers to them in the introduction. His tale is woven around a comely black girl who is kidnapped by a renegade Portuguese slaver and taken into the interior and her rescue by and eventual marriage to Waterboer, "a noble half-caste chieftain"...'
