[1882] FIRST EDITION hardcover. Binding: Dark brown with illustrations, decorations in black, gilt lettering, 384 pages. Frontispiece/tissue overlay, plus 14 illustrations throughout. Condition of binding: Expected age darkening, light soiling, and rubbing. Light wear to extremities; bumps to top corners (which caused creases to top corners of pages). Gilt is bright, joints and hinges not cracked or torn. Interior: Old names on endpapers, a later name dated 1959 on first free endpaper. Some remains from old cello tape and sticker on endpapers. Small corner piece missing from pgs. 187/188 (not affecting text). Preliminaries/text block lightly age toned, periodic offsetting and foxing. Overall, book is Very Good. Free of bookplates, stickers, writing and underlines. Text is clear, very readable. Illustrations clear, vivid. This is the original 1882, not a facsimile, print-on-demand, or photocopied copy. Not a former library book. A nice collectible first edition. This work is believed to be the first book of the U.S. Civil War told by a private (rather than historians, officers, or observers of the war).
