32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. On offer is a super archive of three [3] ledger/account books of George Lehner, Jr. a cobbler [shoemaker] in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The ledger details George's business from 1868 to 1873 with more than 900 pages of recorded transactions of detailed accounts of shoes, boots, and other footwear sold or repaired by George Lehner Jr., a master cobbler and his staff of shoemakers. Research of the 1860 U. S. Census shows George's father, (George Sr.) age 56, as a "Master Shoemaker" born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany; George, age 19, as a Shoemaker's Apprentice, born in Pennsylvania. Living with his mother, Elizabeth, age 50, and sister Margaret, age 14. Two shoemakers and a servant living with the family: Henry Keagy, Sebastian Stout, and Elizabeth Beam. The 1870 U. S. Census, lists George, now age 28, as a "Boot and Shoe Merchant" born in Pennsylvania; he was married to Margaret Lehner, age 26; they had 3 children: May, age 4, Charles age 3, Margaret age 1, and George, age 3 months. Two shoemakers and a servant live with them: Lewis Barnaker, Lewis Geotman, and Elizabeth Miller. The 3 account books are a Who's Who of Franklin County in the 1860s and 1870s with many, many hundreds of names: Crawford, Croft, Cassel, Crepler, Chambers, Culbertson, Caufman, Clugston, Cridler, Collins, Coser, Colby, Crider, Evans, Ebersole, Embich, Eckert, Eyster, Etter, Embich, Ehrhart, Eiker, Embich, Foltz, Foust, Falkenstein, Frey, Fetterhoff, Gibbons, Gehr, Garver, Hafer, Huber, Hassler, Heoller, Heelman, Heefner, Houser, Hutchinson, Grier, Gibbs, Greenawalt, Geige, Huber, Heid, Hoffman, Huber, Heagy, Henebarger, Jarrett, Kokenaur, Keefer, Kennedy, Kaufman, Kimmel, Keller, Klipper, Keagy, Kindline, Koonitz, Kreighbaum, Latshaw, Laudenslager, Landis, Leedy, Lehman, Leisher, Lightcap, McClintock, McCuloh, Niecley, Nixon, Neff, Pillsbury, Plough, Phillippy, Paxton, Reifsneider, Reif, Radebaugh, Rinehart, Robertson, Richter, Snider, Senseig, Spangler, Steelhause, Snively, Shylock, Shetter, Seibert, Trostle, Trittle, Thompson, Trautmjan, Tilghman, Wolfson, Wengert, Welker, Wadebaugh, Wallace, Zuck etc., etc. The first account book is dated 1868 to1872, 580 pages of handwritten shoe shop accounts; second account book: dated 1872 to 1874, 318 pages; third account book: dated 1869 to 1874, 70 pages. Included are accounts for repairing footwear and selling footwear: calf leather shoes, repairing shoes, soling shoes, heeling shoes, boots, soleing small shoes, gaiters, patching boots, gums, button boots, button shoes, button gaiters, slippers, boys shoes, shoes for wife, selling shoe polish, vamping shoes, etc. etc. No library or institution markings. Pages are clean. The front cover and first few pages of Volume One are detached from the spine. Volume One lacks one or two of the first pages, which are index pages for customers' names beginning with the letters A and B. The spine of Volume One has much loss of the leather surface.
