First edition of the 1841 issue. 16mo. Original brown cloth with a slightly worn title label. Includes a folding map of London, a multi-panel folding sectional diagram, seven double-spread colour route maps, four double-spread plans (Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester) and one folding colour map of the entire country. The hinges cracked and tender, the rear hinge reinforced with tape. A good copy of this scarce survivor. Laid-in is a related newspaper clipping: "When in 1819 George Bradshaw proposed to issue, at regular intervals, a universal railway guide and time-table, he ran into all sorts of difficulties. The running of trains was very irregular, and some railway companies declined absolutely to furnish the proposed information. At a board meeting of one of the railways the Chairman, addressing his fellow directors, said 'We are asked, gentlemen, to supply Bradshaw's Railway Guide with particulars of our trains. I most strongly object to our complying with this request. I believe it would tend to make punctuality a sort of obligation'". Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover
