Map also shows an inset of the Atlantic Ocean showing the American and European Ports and the Routes of the Ocean Steamers.
Map is dissected into 32 sections, mounted on linen.
The decorative border includes twelve views. \"The vignettes on the map provide an interesting visual compliment to the information disseminated in the document itself, adding a distinctive American flavor to the nineteenth century map trade.\\\" (1)
The map “Is a magnificent piece of map-making, and was sold by John Ball of New Orleans and W.R. Babcock of Charleston, South Carolina. It is similar to the earlier maps of this cartographer but contains little of the details of the gold region of California. Seemingly Fremont’s routes are the only ones which show any of the features of the Great Basin. Portland is prominent on the Willamette near its confluence with the Columbia, and the Northwest is fairly well shown, while Utah and New Mexico as usual include present Nevada and Arizona. General Kearny’s route and Lieut. Col Cooke’s Wagon route are prominent on the southern border. This was a large and showy wall map of the United States and it had much influence.“ (2)
