Genet, Jean (Translated by Bernard Frechtman) : The Screens: A Play In 17 Scenes

Grove Press, New York City, NY, 1962

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 201 pages. The author's most ambitious play. One of the greatest plays of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited print run as hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jean Genet's "The Screens" in a felicitous English translation by Bernard Frechtman. Set amid the Algerian War and with a mammoth cast of fifty. The play's complex structure and controversial subject matter ensured that it would be only occasionally produced even in France, and it had not yet been produced there at the time of the book's American publication. "Only a handful of 20th-century writers, such as Kafka and Proust, have as important, as authoritative, as irrevocable a voice and style" (Susan Sontag). Genet is one of very few great writers who also wrote great plays. Indeed, it is hard to think of any other major novelist or intellectual who has pulled off what Genet has with his ground-breaking works for the theatre. An absolute "must-have" title for Jean Genet collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection (price-clipped) is still in fine condition overall: Every internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. It is priced accordingly. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JEAN GENET TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
