GENERAL EDMUND WINSTON PETTUS' SISTER : 1864 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT CIVIL WAR LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY THE SISTER OF NOTED CONFEDERATE GENERAL AND 3 TIME PRISONER OF WAR WHO WOULD LATER BECOME A US SENATOR

Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is a sensational, original 1864 diary like manuscript letter handwritten by the sister of the noted Confederate General Edmund Winston Pettus. The long, six page, densely written letter on folio sheets, approximately seven inches wide, are unsigned and General Pettus is only referred to as her dear brother but casual research of her writings describe Pettus' 3 time status as a prisoner of the war plus other descriptions wherein Pettus' sister also details other facts that can again only be attributed to Pettus. Truly unique insider content regarding the return of soldier's to the deep South and the author relates details of 'the Negroes' assisting the Confederate war effort, the Yankee's intrusions and her assertion that General Lee awaits General Grant in Virginia and has a warm reception planned. She also refers at different occasions to receiving 'intelligence' and reports from escaped rebels and much, much more. Even as late as 1864 this woman carries intense regard for the Confederate effort and their assumed positive ending. Some chipping and the right hand edge of the sheets are unevenly torn but all legible, no loss and appears complete. Overall G+.. Book Condition: Good+
