Signature on beige card by John Henry Gear in black ink. Card is adhered to beige paper with a Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. No date, circa 1878-1882. Card measures 4 1/4" x 3"; paper measures 7 3/4" x 10 3/8." Card, paper, and signature are very clean and intact. Card reads: "Yours truly, John H. Gear, Governor of Iowa." Over the signature is "State of Iowa" and a couple inscriptions including the word, "Office." John Henry Gear (1825-1900) was the eleventh Governor of Iowa, a U.S. Representative, and a U.S. Senator. In 1863, Gear was elected mayor of Burlington, Iowa. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1871-1877 where he was Speaker of the House for two terms. Gear was elected as Governor of Iowa (Republican) from 1878-1882 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1894 and 1900.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
