Original publisher's black and white lithographic nautical chart showing the Isthmus of Panama (and Darien). A very rare navigational chart. No date, circa 1851-1874. Chart with margins measures 19" x 15 3/4"; actual chart area measures 17 1/2" x 14." Chart has vertical and horizontal and fold lines; some splitting at the folds within the chart area. A few very faint spots. Two pieces of tape on the back that patch a tear on the right edge and a split at the bottom edge. Chart is very clean and intact overall. The Isthmus of Panama was also known as the Isthmus of Darien. The chart shows the isthmus and natural features such as rivers, the Gulf of Panama, and Panama Bay. The chart includes numbers showing the water depths, a compass rose and magnetic variation placed within the Gulf of Panama, and various navigational aids. Scale of distance in British Statute Miles is located at the bottom beneath the title. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. "R. H. Laurie, 53 Fleet Street, London." is printed beneath the chart. Richard Holmes Laurie (1777-1858) was a map publisher and son of the Anglo-Scottish mezzotint engraver and map publisher, Robert Laurie (c. 1755-1836). Robert's company specialized in publishing nautical charts, and after his retirement in 1812, Richard took over the business. Although "R. H. Laurie" is the publisher of this chart, Alexander George Findlay (1812-1875) was in charge of the business at this point. Findlay had taken over the business after Richard's passing in 1858 and propelled the company's success even further with his skills as a geographer and hydrographer. This chart was made for Findlay's Directory for the Navigation of the Pacific Ocean. The directory was first published in 1851 and comprised two volumes; one for the North Pacific (Volume One) and the other for the South Pacific (Volume Two). "The Isthmus of Panama & Darien" is the first chart in the North Pacific volume.. Map. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
