Original marriage license with printed and handwritten text in black ink on white paper. Black-and-white illustrated header at top of license. Dated June 22, 1904, the day of Fielding Johnson Stilson and Viola Rosamund Winter's marriage. 17" x 14." License is virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning, three horizontal fold lines, one vertical fold line at center, and slight wrinkling. A Near Fine copy. This is an original marriage license solemnizing or certifying the marriage of Fielding Johnson Stilson (1877-1953) and Viola Rosamund Winter (1881-1970) on June 22, 1904 at St. Paul's pro-Cathedral in Los Angeles, California. Fielding was the son of Mary Stilson and W. W. Stilson and born in Topeka, Kansas. The Stilsons were Los Angeles socialites, and Fielding was a leading businessman of Los Angeles. Viola was the daughter of drama critic and author William Winter and Elizabeth Winter (nee Campbell) and was born in New Brighton, Staten Island, New York. Fielding and Viola became early developers of Angelino Heights in Los Angeles. The license has an embossed Seal of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County affixed by Deputry Clerk W. C. Watson. The wedding ceremony was read by Reverend J. J. Wilkins. The official witnesses of the marriage ceremony were Charles Seyler and Winthrop H. Blackstone. The engagement and wedding of Fielding and Viola was announced in several newspapers of the time including the Los Angeles Herald and Stratford-upon-Avon Herald. Several noted guests from theater circles were in attendance including actor Henry Irving, Charles Wyndham, John L. Toole, and actress Julia Marlowe. Some of the newspaper articles describe the beautiful dress and jewels worn by Viola on her wedding day and other details such as members of the wedding party and what they wore as well. One of the jewels worn by Viola was an emerald pin gifted to her by Irving. Reverend Wilkins was also named in some of the articles.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: No Binding
