FIELDING**, HENRY: : The History of the Adventures of JOSEPH ANDREWS and His Friend Mr Abraham Adams.**

LONDON.THE FOLIO SOCIETY,1967.

ISBN No ISBN.

UK,8vo HB+slipcase,2nd edn.[There was an earlier, with same illustrator,edn/issue in 1953 but with an illustrated dw/dj,as were nearly all the early issues of the Folio Society.Only 4 exceptions with no issued dw/dj in the first 68 titles until the subsequent and ongoing introduction of the slipcase.FS's 1st slipcased volume was 'The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe' by Longus in a translation by George Moore (1954).Dw/djs were still intermittently issued for further volumes along with slipcased issues.] FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj - issued with plain brown paper-covered card slipcase instead of the dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean slipcase; with negligible shelf-wear or bumping, rubbing or creasing - no nicks or tears present.Bright, crisp, clean white linen background with a reverse repeat pattern in brown by Derrick Harris,a dark brown leather spine-label with gilt doublelined border edges around bright, crisp, stamped gilt lettering within,a brown+white striped headband and immaculate plain pale yellow eps.The leather spine-label has a minor abrasion spot affecting the bottom edge of the gilt border edges but leaving the lettering unaffected, and spine/ backstrip is also but inevitably but slightly age-darkened,so lightly discoloured - ubiquitous fault from all the copies so far handled.Top edges coloured yellow/lemon,fore-edges white and uncoloured - but all bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - would appear unread apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB+s/case,5-319pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,a foreword,a preface,Books I-IV comprising 18,17,13 and 16 chapters respectively, 5 full-page b/w wood-engravings (includes the frntis) and 16 b/w vignetted wood-engravings throughout the text - all by Derrick Harris, plus [unpaginated] b/w wood-engraving full-page frntis, title page,individual(4) Book separator pages - each with full-page b/w wood-engraving to verso and verso of last page of story. This edn is set in 10 on 12 point Monotype Plantin and printed by Richard Clay (The Chaucer Press), Ltd.,Bungay,Suffolk.Bound by W. & J Mackay,Ltd,Chatham. As a 2nd edn, nearly as same as the 1953 issue in same binding design and in type only, and reset throughout and with different pagination,a different printer (R. and R. Clark),a different binder (Hunter & Foulis) and an illustrated dw/dj instead of a s/case. Joseph Andrews is a parody of the heroine -in-moral-danger novels of Samuel Richardson, the story of a young man so beautiful that every woman he meets longs to entice him into bed,and so innocent that he notices neither this nor the more dangerous pitfalls of his path through life. Derrick Harris (1919-60).Born Chislehurst,Kent.Studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, under Noel Rooke and John Farleigh.A wood engraver and illustrator. His illustrations for the Folio Society are bold, humorous and decorative in a deliberately archaic style. The Folio Society’s formula for success is publishing books with exceptional typography, illustrations, paper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic texts and uses skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books.Fiction and non-fiction titles are published. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too!
