Three pages, 1958-59. Signed by Leslie Fiedler of Missoula, Montana to Rust Hills, two of them on Montana State University letterhead. Leslie Fiedler (1917-2003) was an American literary critic and educator. His views on politics, sex, and drugs were considered controversial. His best known book is 'Love and Death in the American Novel' (1960). Rust Hills (1924-2008) was a fiction editor at Esquire magazine. In the first letter Fiedler sends along an early, uncut manuscript of "Nude Croquet" for Hills to consider for an anthology. When "Nude Croquet" was first published in Esquire in 1957, it caused a stir among some of the magazine's readers. In the second letter Fiedler writes about taking on literary projects that yield no financial gain: "I keep telling myself 'No more Albatrosses! Put Money in your purse!'". In the third letter, he writes about the "resentment" he has felt towards a "Stupid Piece" that Arnold Gingrich has written. Gingrich (1903-1976) was Esquire's publisher.. Manuscript.
