This is a biographical eulogy of John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) that was originally given by Edward Everett at Faneuil Hall in Boston. In his Prefatory Note, Everett states that much of his biographical account is based on C. W. Upham's memoir that was prepared for the National Portrait Gallery in 1839. However, Everett explains that his biography includes added details from the papers of John's father, Charles Francis Adams, as well as from his own experiences with John. Edward Everett (1794-1865) was an American politician, diplomat, educator, orator, and Unitarian pastor. He served as a United States Representative from Massachusetts from 1825-1835, the 15th Governor of Massachusetts from 1836-1840, the U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom from 1841-1845, the 20th Secretary of State from 1852-1853, and a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1853-1854..
