Eveleigh writes to inform Jardine that he has accepted an offer of GBP12 for a Settler's Diary. H states that the members of the family "do not seem desirous that it should be blazoned abroad that "Harry Hastings" was the Rev. John Ayliff"..., saying that it would be sufficient to say that Harry Hastings was "the pseudonym of a settler whose name is well known throughout South Africa today". He states that there is no doubt that the diary is Ayliff's work. The letter discusses social arrangements and Methodist matters. William Eveleigh was the author of "South West Africa" (London 1915), the first English comprehensive English language survey of Namibian geography and economy, written with the incorporation into South Africa in mind. William Eveleigh and his successors in office as book stewards collected and preserved many Methodist Church’s valuable records. The death of Rev. William Eveleigh and the dispersal of his own private collection of Africana provided the incentive for the establishment of the Methodist Archives.
