Erdbrink, D. P : A Review of Fossil and Recent Bears of the Old World with remarks on their phylogeny based upon their dentition. Volume 1

(Deventer, Drukkerij Jan de Lange, 1953)

Includes loose "Index of Cursivated Names of Animals and Plants"; 230 x 155mm; original wraps, somewhat worn, and rather sunned on spine; brief inscription on half-title page; pp. xii + 320; black-and-white photographic plates, line drawings in text, and elaborate folding tables; errata slip tipped in. Good condition. "The subject of the present treatise, a review of all the recent and fossil Bears of Europe, Africa and Asia, together with some remarks on American Ursids, is something which was the result of a steady accumulation of bibliographical references around a nucleus formed by the description of the fossil teeth of Ursus in the collection of Chinese drugstore-fossils belonging to Professor G. H. R. von KOENIGSWALD at Utrecht. . . . Although my original intention was only the description of the before-mentioned fossil teeth, I soon discovered that there existed such a welter of conflicting statements and views not only on the fossil Bears occurring in China, but on the recent ones from there and elsewhere as well, that I decided to have a try at the creation of some semblance of order in this confusion."
