The letter contains six pages and describes some of his trip aboard the Soviet Russian ship S.S. Sibir [S. S. Siberia] leaving from the Port of London into the North Sea with mentions of Intourist officials, Russian tea service, a suicide in Paris, 'passengers are an amazing collection: some Russian, Armenian, queer Americans and rather cranky English.' Elston had a very distinguished record of war service, starting as a regimental medical officer with the Coldstream Guards during which time he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery.
