A superb calligraphic manuscript of some 272pp, in classic German script., bound in contemporary 1/2 morocco, raised bands dividing gilt panels each with a central elaborate fleuron, heavy cloth boards. The dating is based partly on the style of binding, and partly on internal evidence which details observations dating between 1857 and 1862. The chapter headings are in Gothic lettering. Illustrated throughout with superb drawings and diagrams relating to various aspects of navigation, many of them heightened with watercolour. There is a superb drawing of a building on the half title, and a two masted sailing vessel on the title page. A loose photograph of an adult male, presumably the author, is tipped in at the front of the volume, and an invoice for many items of Sailor's euipment from Sturken, v. Bargen & Co of Hamburg laid down on the inside rear board.
