DEBORAH HURD [NEE HAYES] : 1836 BOOK OF MEMORY AND VERSE WITH REMARKABLE HANDWRITTEN FOUR [4] PAGE DEDICATION BY FIREBRAND ABOLITIONIST AND MEMBER OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD - THE REVEREND ENOCK MACK

12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is an 1835 handwritten Book of Memories in a lovely red leather album. Deborah Hayes, later known as Deborah Hurd lived in Dover, N.H. at the time the entries were made. Deborah tipped in a picture of herself and on the back of another card was a statement of her birth, death etc. The book's first entry, dated Dover June 2, 1836 seems to have been reserved as a place of honor as the reader finds the first entry is a 3 page rousing dedication by firebrand abolitionist, member of the Underground Railroad in Pennsylvania the Reverend Enoch Mack: "My Dear Young Friend You have presented me this album accompanied by a token of your charity requesting of me a dedicatory article. Had such a request been ten years ago I would be disposed to dedicate.......to earthly love, earthly friendship. For then I had not learned propriety of all things…...." The diary would be very good save for some rubbing to the leather in this premium book. Binding is secure. The entries in this near filled book date from 1836 through 1841. Nice naïve/folk art on some of the pages. Deborah was born in 1816 and died in 1867. The album features some lovely engravings, rag paper and was published by J. C. Riker, N.Y. 1835.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good
