DE MAISTRE, Xavier : Voyage Autour De Ma Chambre Suivi de L'Expédition Nocturne

1877

Librairie des Bibliophiles. Paris. 1877. Reprint. Bound in half brown crushed morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. Leather rubbed to extremities of spine. Six engraved plates by Hédouin. Bookplate of George Louis Beer, Lecturer in European history at Columbia University 1893-7. Pages slightly toned otherwise a near fine copy. Xavier was born to an aristocratic family at Chambéry in October 1763. He served when young in the army of Piedmont-Sardinia, and in 1790 wrote his fantasy A Journey Around My Room (originally published in French as Voyage autour de ma chambre). It was written to stave off boredom whilst the author was serving a 42-day sentence of confinement to his room for participating in an illegal duel. The book is written in the style of a travelogue and discusses the contents and furniture of his room as well as imaginary situations and dialogues. The theme of the work is that pleasure can be found in one's everyday surroundings. At the end of the work he notes his regret at having to return to society. A sequel A Nocturnal Expedition Around My Room, was published in 1825.
