Darley (1822-1888), a well-known illustrator known for his works of famous authors of the 19th century, including Charles Dickens. Two frontispieces with tissue overlay, 462 pages. Condition of binding: Lightly age darken, light age wear. Free of cracks or tears to hinges. Endpapers: Beautiful bookplate of Henry Bigelow Williams of Boston (believed to be a well-known property developer, land owner, and distinguished citizen). William also hand wrote his name, city [Boston] and date [1869], and “32 volumes” on first free endpaper. Several pages have light chips to extremities. Overall, extremely Very Good condition for an uncommon antiquarian novel. Pages are clean, readable. Frontispieces are clear, vivid. This wonderful story by James Fenimore Cooper was originally published in 1830. The novel is set in 17th century New York and the sea. There is an abduction of a woman by the pirate captain of the brigantine Water Witch. That ship is pursued by the women’s suitor, Captain Ludlow. There is adventure and romance infused into the narrative and the story is strikingly rich, colorful, and influenced by Italy, such as comparing New York with Italy. Cooper wrote the novel while staying in a villa near Naples. One reader said the story grabs you and pulls you in. An enduring story. Collectible.
