Pages are very clean and intact. A fine copy. Court proceedings against Julius Emspak, who was interrogated after being subpoenaed by the Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). HUAC was a committee under the House of Representatives formed in 1938 to investigate citizens and organizations thought to have Communist or Fascist ties. These proceedings took place in 1950 at the height of the Red Scare during the Cold War when McCarthyist tactics were common. Julius Emspak was the General Secretary-Treasurer of a labor union called the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America and the Editor of UE News, the union's official newspaper. Emspak was asked a series of questions concerning any Communist activities. Emspak refused to answer many of the questions based upon "the first amendment, supplemented by the fifth." Due to his refusal to answer the questions, Emspak was convicted on multiple accounts of contempt. In Emspak v. United States (1955), the judgment of Emspak was reversed with directions to the District Court to enter a judgment of acquittal based upon the findings that Emspak was not properly informed as to whether he definitively had to answer the questions or not and thus could not be held in contempt of the court.
