A unique collection of items relating to the "X" Club of Sacramento. The X Club was a loosely organized social club formed by a small group of Sacramento residents in 1944. The club was active until at least 1968. Based on the rosters, the X Club typically consisted of about thirty to forty people. Club members were mostly from the Sacramento neighborhoods of Downtown, East Sacramento, Curtis Park, and Land Park and were middle-class professionals, housewives, and the like. The Club usually met eight to twelve times per year. There were apparently no bylaws or membership qualifications for the Club. The purpose of the Club was socializing, entertainment, amusement, and recreation. Members would take turns brainstorming ideas and themes for parties and gatherings and send out invitations. Sometimes, parties celebrated traditional holidays such as St. Patrick's Day and Halloween. Other parties were "White Elephants." Get-togethers were held at a variety of places including members' homes, in restaurants, and tourist destinations. The scrapbooks contain printed and handwritten (signed) membership rosters, party invitations, and various photos and mementos from these gatherings. The following is a description of some of the items and Club events represented in the collection. 1) Cloth scrapbook: invitation to Chinese dinner at someone's home; printed greeting cards, Club picnic invite; sports at McKinley Park; American River hike; Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra; Valentine dinner; paper puppet from Halloween party; tree-shaped roster for Christmas party; Ormsbee's Tavern; colored pencil drawing of a Hide-a-Way Cabin, South Gate, Yosemite; shamrock cut-outs; White Elephant invites; and X Club Buffet Dinner napkin. 2) Leather scrapbook: China Palace, Sacramento (Chinese and American Restaurant) roster with fortune cookie fortunes; UC Davis campus map; Honolulu party; pumpkin-shaped roster for Halloween; Sacramento State College play program; Rialto Restaurante guest list and menu; swim party; and antique party. 3) Folder: "Espagnole" dinner invite; St. Patrick's Day invite; "Hobo Brunch"; Strawberry Bingo; New York color slideshow; Micke Grove picnic, Lodi; Twin Bridges Resort paper placemat; and Coral Reef Lodge, Sacramento brochure..
