CLOETE, Maria Elizabeth : A Music Manuscript Book Dated Woodstock (Cape Town) 1838, of Over 220 Pages, Containing Transcripts of Numerous Popular Ballads, Strauss Compositions Etc,

Very good in the original limp morocco, spine defective, front hinge split externally, extremities worn, few short marginal tears but in general clean and tight. A fascinating anthology of what was popular in upper Cape society in the 1830's and 1840's. Maria Elizabeth Cloete is recorded in Pama as a daughter of Dirk Cloete: she was baptised in 1802 or 1804 (there are two entries). Dirk Cloete married into the Van der Byl family, so we have here a vivd souvenir of the famous apocryphal legend: ""In the early Cape, there were only two Families worth considering! The one family was the b>Cloete's and the other, the van der Byl's. According to their status, the van der Byl's ONLY spoke to the Cloete's and the Cloete's ONLY spoke to God!"
