Unfortunately, there are only 113 plates from a total of 120; missing are portraits of Tobias Smollett, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Flora Macdonald, James Boswell, James Macpherson, Robert Burns, and Sir Walter Scott. Five small portfolios (grey paper boards, lettered and illustrated in black, backed in blue cloth, string ties) contain unbound signatures and plates, as issued, which are meant to be bound as two volumes. Text is complete; although one leaf in vol. 1 (p. 83-84) has a closed tear. Ex- library, showing minor soiling to the boards, signs of label removal on spine, light wear at extremities, and bookplates on portfolio pastedowns.
