Many decades have passed since the regular use of steam power on the main lines of the British and Irish railway systems.Despite this the steam locomotive,said to be one of man's greatest inventions,and incidentally one which has
been used almost entirely for peaceful purposes,still retains a great fascination for large numbers of enthusiasts,old and young.
Giving an outline history of the development of the rail-borne steam locomotive in the British Isles from its inception in 1804 right through to 1960, when the last newly-constructed steam locomotive built for main line service in Great Britain took to the rails.All of the principal designs,or representatives of them,are described and illustrated.
There are also brief details of the improvements which have taken place over the years from the somewhat crude and primitive early designs right through to the vastly improved,splendid machines of the later years. For the benefit of younger readers in particular,some emphasis has been put on the many examples of locomotives which have fortunately survived for preservation,either as static exhibits in museums,or at the numerous centres through-out the country which run steam-operated railways.The opportunity to see many of the engines in steam makes this book a true directory,and not purely a history of an extinct technology.
