Original publisher's page showing two black and white engraved nautical charts of the harbor of Brest, France (Province of Bretagne) and the bay of Cadiz, Spain (Province of Andalusia). No date, circa 1780s. Page measures 10 3/4" x 8"; the chart of Brest measures 6 5/8" x 4"; the chart of Cadiz measures 6 5/8" x 4 5/8." Page and charts are very clean and intact except for a few very faint spots and minimal age wear. "J. Cary, sculp." printed below the chart of Cadiz, which denotes John Cary as the engraver. Each chart includes numbers showing water depths (soundings), a compass rose, and other navigational aids. Each chart also shows cities and natural geographical features. As mentioned in the title, these chart of Cadiz was surveyed by Henri Michelot and Laurent Bremond. Although not much is known about Bremond, Michelot was a French cartographer and hydrographer of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Michelot's charts are exemplary in part because he had first-hand experience at sea. Michelot also authored or co-authored several influential maps and charts of the Mediterranean.. Map.
