Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) was an English poet. She began writing poetry at the age of 11 and soon became a well-known and widely respected poet both in Britain and the United States. She became acquainted with many literary greats throughout her lifetime and later became married to fellow writer Robert Browning. According to editor Frederic G. Kenyon in his Preface, this is the first complete collection of Browning's poetical works (that have appeared in book form) to be published with the exception of her earlier translation of Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound, which he explains was not to Browning's personal standards and that she made a later translation of Prometheus Bound.
