Elinor M. Brent-Dyer(1894-1969). British authoress of nearly 100 Girls' Stories,chiefly in school settings.She created the 'Chalet School' series,beginning with 'The School at the Chalet'(1925);these were set in an international school in the Tyrol and centred on the character of 'Joey ' Bettany - one of the original nine pupils when her sister opened the school,an English girl who rises to be head of the school and then in adult life becomes a writer of girls' stories.The Chalet School stories, published over a period of at least 40 years, have introduced young readers to scores of girls,each with one dominant trait illustrated through suitable vicissitudes.The clever and the careless,the earnest and the mischievious,the lonely and the debonair - one after another the girls appear,make their mark on the stories,and vanish again.
Jo alone is drawn in some depth and forms a link between many of the stories,even when she is glimpsed only in the reminiscences of other characters.The last book in the series,'Prefects of the Chalet School',was published posthumously in 1970.
