Original publisher's black and white engraved nautical chart showing Boston Harbor. Chart with margins measures 10 1/8" x 8 1/8"; actual chart area measures 11" x 9." Chart has faint dampstaining and slight chipping at the bottom edge but is clean and intact overall. The title, scales of distance in statute miles and nautical miles, and the following are printed in the lower-left corner: ""Common tides rise 10 feet. Spring tides 13 feet, though frequently varied by the winds. High water at full & Change at XL1/4. Lrs. & frs. by D. R. Harrison." At the top is "Engraved for the American Coast Pilot, 14th Ed." The lower-right corner lists the following: "The dark shaded lines shew the H.W. mark. Those unshaded, the parts dry at L.W. The soundings are all reduced to L.W." Beneath the chart is the following: "Drawn by E. Blunt; Published by E. & G.W. Blunt, New York, 1841; Printed by W. Hooker; Engd. [Engraved] by Hatch." Chart includes numbers showing water depths, a compass rose and magnetic variation, and courses. Natural features such as islands and rivers are also shown. Joseph DesBarres (1721-1824) was a cartographer who served in the in the Seven Years' War and was a personal assistant to General James Wolfe. DesBarres was known for his Atlantic Neptune which was the most comprehensive collection of maps, charts, and views of North America published in the eighteenth century. Edmund Blunt (1770-1862) was a publisher of nautical charts and books and printed the first edition of the American Coast Pilot in 1796. Around 1827, Blunt retired and his sons took over the company and continued his work as a publisher of high-quality sea charts. The Blunts were also known for their collaboration with the U.S. Coast Survey which allowed their charts to be up-to-date. This chart was printed for the fourteenth edition of the American Coast Pilot.. Map. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
