The letters are reprinted from the Dundee Evening Telegraph for private circulation. The Black Watch, together with other volunteer companies, joined the Highland Brigade under General Hector Macdonald. For approximately one year they campaigned in the Orange Free State during which period they marched over 1400 miles. At various times the Company was at Norval's Pont, Bloemfontein, Winburg, Ventersburg, Kroonstad and Reitz. The volunteers experienced frequent skirmishing with the enemy but were not seriously engaged until the Retiefs Nek operations of July 22 - 24, 1900. In September 1900 they took part in an attack on a Boer column near Winburg. The following month they completed a short spell of garrison duty in Ladybrand, and in November, they were the occupying force at Valentines Kop during operations to entrap General de Wet. During the latter part of their service, from January to the end of March, 1900, the volunteers operated in south eastern Orange River Colony".
