\\\\\\\"It is the earliest and most decorative special map of the East coast of Africa embracing eastern Cape, Natal, Portuguese East and Kenya\\\\\\\" (Tooley). \\\\\\\"The rivers (including the Spirito Santo, reputed by geographers to be the Limpopo of today), the larger lakes, and the mountains (including the Lunae Montes) are typical of maps of that time\\\\\\\" (Norwich).

Appeared in J. H. van Linschoten\\\\\\\'s \\\\\\\"Itinerario\\\\\\\" in 1596.

This highly decorative map of southeast Africa depicts many interesting vignettes, including a man submitting a petition to Christian emperor Prester John, a lion looking over his shoulder at two large lizards, two elephants keeping close to one another, and in the water two tall ships engage each other beside a large sea monster, a colourful compass rose sits to their right above a \\\\\\\"school\\\\\\\" of sea monsters, another sea monster sits north of Madagascar, while south of Madagascar sails a tall ship followed by a sea monster. They are surrounded by two decorative compass roses, the one on the left being crowned with flowers. A scale sits along the lower margin, and to its right is the large bilingual title cartouche within an ornate floral casing., Tooley Africa p. 67.
