Boston: Gray and Bowen, 1832. 110 pp. 12mo., green cloth with paper spine label. Fair to good, rear joint starting, spine label scraped with only remnants legible. Light pale spotting to cloth. Interior foxed, hinges starting. Rear flyleaf has small chip and small closed tear. Lovely lithograph frontispiece portrait, slight soil to page edges, not affecting image. Hannah Adams (1775-1831), though she thought herself timid and unworldly, was the first American woman to support herself as an author. Her first book, An Alphabetical Compendium of Various Sects (1784), went through several editions; later editions are titled A View of Religions. She was regarded by her contemporaries as an able and industrious author; yet she herself made only modest claims for her achievement. Her memoir, published posthumously, is the chief source of information about her; and, with characteristic modesty, it was written partly to raise money for her ailing younger sister. (N.A.W.), Good
